Open question

This is a type of question which allows the Coachee to give a full and lengthy answer.  Assuming the most basic division of questions into closed and open ones (although this is just one category of questions which a Coach uses) there should be a majority of the second kind during a session.  An open question can begin with the words: What, how, when, what for, etc.  In coaching questions beginning with “why” should rather be avoided.

After asking an open question, the coach should listen actively, often even leaving necessary space for the answer to settle in.

There are many types of open questions depending on their purpose, moment in the session, etc.
